Littoral drifts of sand continually threaten to block the harbour entrance of Durban, South Africa’s key port. Moreover, at the southern side of the breakwater sand accumulates, and at the northern side sand is eroded.
The DOP dredge pump 350L was hung in a Liebherr 1100 crane, and ran on a separate power pack. At a dredging depth of max 3 m, it mined some 700 tons of fine beach sand per hour, totaling at 300,000 tons for the project. The DOP pumped the sand over 250 m to a booster station, thus replenishing the eroded beach.
